By Hook or by Rook

A student asks the chess master, “Master, how many moves do you think ahead?”
To which the master replies,
“One. Only one —
and it is always the right one.”

There was a time when whiskey was legally deemed medicine
medicinal alcohol the Feds took to calling it
so as the 18th Amendment reigned supreme
and those tea totaling tame women and their men
appeared to have stolen our proverbial knight
doctors wrote prescriptions
lots of them
100 proof whiskey got you through snake bits and surgeries
indigestion, heartburn, politics
a little on the gums for teething babies
a little in the goblet for ol’ times sake
it is still that way
only now we must visit pot dispensaries
on our way home from the liquor store
one medicine still a schedule 1
the other taxed at 50 percent
roll one up, pour the other neat
two remedies mingling, tingling
opening us up
letting us breathe in a quiet moment
away from the news
the latest rabid decree
all the clamor about what we cannot do about it
it is impossible to erase what is happening around us
so we must meet it full stop
and here we are
slivering a moment
big moon waning overhead
celebrating the feats of humans who show up
like Paul, myself, and all the listeners tuning in right now
embracing you, us
borrowing evenings, afternoons, mornings
like this one to bring our heads, our hearts
into one place
so we can speak what is ripe
retain our queen
preserve our nights
rally the king within
we do not go gently
we rise up, rook, resist
like I hope our weed and whiskey loving first president
would have wanted us to do
focusing the voice medicines of we the people
the seven nations
the LGBT community
the immigrants
the children of immigrants
the children
the wild women and men who like them that way
so let’s raise our peace signs with our glasses
and drink to the water of life
the fortitude
the virtue
the empathy
the tenacious freedom
of we
the loving people
who truly want
truth
and justice
for all

Many mahalos to
